William R Glenn, contractor, built this neoclassical Revival style house for Cammie Lord and Elisha Holloway. In 1918, it was purchased by Henry Lacy Hunt, a bank officer and wholesale grocer and this was home to the Hunt family until 1967.**note full pics and drone will be uploaded Sunday April 11.***This house has a prominent historic pedigree which has been recognized by the Historic Wilmington Foundation and was closely scrutinized by the Historic Preservation Commission and the City of Wilmington. Virtually no expense was spared in a faithful restoration to the exterior. This home and the restoration won the 2020 Preservation Award for Restoration.Like many historic homes, the Holloway-Hunt House had fallen into a sad state of disrepair. With modifications and historically inaccurate updates over the decades, the home's exterior needed total restoration from the roof to the foundation and every surface in between. With a keen commitment to historic preservation, the Holloway-Hunt House has been restored to its original stately appearance.The restoration focused on returning the structure to its original design and construction. The removal of a 1950-1970 addition to the rear of the home and a re-opening of the two-story rear porches were key aspects of the project. All original components of the home's exterior were salvaged, repaired or faithfully replicated in order to prepare the structure for another 100 years of service. Improvements include:Replacement of the Roof and gutters: The original built-in gutters, long since failed and damaged by incompatible repairs and temporary replacements, were re-lined with copper, hand formed and soldered on site. All downspouts were replaced as well to effectively shed water and protect the structure below. The roof was replaced with new asphalt shingle compliant with the Historic Preservation Commission guidelines. Siding and Trim Repairs: All failed siding was replaced with a custom milled wood siding to match the original. Where rotted beyond repair exterior trim including soffit, fascia, corner boards, and window trim was replaced in kind. Rotted columns and balusters on the front porch were salvaged, removed, restored with epoxy and reinstalled. Window Restoration: On the west side of the front porch a door was returned to its original configuration as a window by replicating and installing a new wood window to match the existing including pullies, sash weights and glazed panes. Additional window sashes were repaired with epoxy and one unsalvageable sash replaced in kind. A non-original window was removed from the kitchen as well to return the home to its original design. Exterior Repainting: Under EPA certification requirements, the entire exterior was prepared for painting following lead-safe work practices before repainting the entire structure. Paint color was researched and selected to best set off the charm of this home and its stature in the community. Rear Porches and Foundation: The rear porch modifications were removed and both porches rebuilt in keeping with their original design. The historic masonry foundation of rusticated concrete block (No longer available) was painstakingly disassembled, salvaged and reinstalled with lime mortar. New continuous footings were also installed to repair existing and prevent future settling of the rear porches. A new rear entry stair was constructed to allow for access to the rear of the home from the off-street parking. Preservation and repairs were done by Nick Balding at Balding Brothers with exceptional local craftsmen. The interior has begun with a new panel box but home needs rewiring. Kitchen and baths are very 80s and waiting for your design touches.
